This monument in honour of the French pilot Georges Guynemer is situated in the centre of Poelkapelle. He was a member of the Escadrille des Cigognes, an elite force of the French air force, who managed to bring down more than fifty German fighter planes. @en |

In het centrum van Poelkapelle staat dit monument ter ere van de Franse piloot Georges Guynemer, lid van het Escadrille des Cigognes, een elitekorps van de Franse luchtmacht, die erin slaagde om meer dan vijftig Duitse gevechtsvliegtuigen neer te halen. Hij werd op 11 september 1917 door een Duits vliegtuig neergeschoten, maar zijn lichaam werd nooit teruggevonden. Op de top van een hoge zuil staat een bronzen ooievaar met neerwiekende vleugels, die vliegt in de richting waar Guynemer zou zijn gecrasht. Het laatste dagorder van Guynemer staat gebeiteld in de steen. @nl |
