The alternative entrance through the side of the church is entirely threshold-free. To open the heavy door to the prayer and reflection area, you may require some extra help. The crypt, located in the basement, is not wheelchair accessible. @en |

The Church of St. Nicholas in Messines is worth a visit for various reasons. Because of the dome, people in the region refer to it as the ‘thick head’ of Messines. A peace carillon of 46 bells hangs in the tower! In the crypt, there is a plaque commemorating Countess Adela of France, the wife of Boudewijn V, the Count of Flanders. @en |

De Mesense Sint-Niklaaskerk is in diverse opzichten een bezoek waard. Wegens de koepel heeft men het in de regio over de ‘dikkop’ van Mesen. De toren is door zijn koepelvormige vorm al van zeer ver te zien. In de toren hangt trouwens ook een vredesbeiaard van 46 klokken! De kerk werd zwaar beschadigd tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog; alleen de 11de-eeuwse Romaanse crypte bleef bewaard. De kerk werd echter na de oorlog heropgebouwd. In de crypte bevindt zich een gedenkplaat ter ere van gravin Adela van Frankrijk, de echtgenote van Boudewijn V, de graaf van Vlaanderen. @nl |
